Mountaineers Challenge Troy to Saturday Battle

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team rounds out its final regular season road trip with a 4 p.m. CT (5 ET) clash with Sun Belt co-leader Troy in Troy, Ala. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers fell to Sun Belt co-leader ODU (tied atop league standings with Troy and James Madison), 71-65, on Thursday in a game that was back-and-forth throughout the fourth quarter, with the Mountaineers trailing by just three points with 9 seconds left. Freshman Chaé Harris and sophomore Emily Carver netted 14 points apiece, while redshirt senior Janay Sanders scored 13 points. Harris drilled 4-of-7 crucial treys. Senior Taylor Lewis led the team with seven rebounds. As a team, the Mountaineers shot 89.5 percent from the line, knocking down 17 of 19 free throws. 
 
Around the Conference
Carver's reign as the league's leader in 3-point percentage (.459) and made 3-pointers per game (averaging 3.4 per game) categories in league play as well as leader for 3-pointers made per game for the season continues. Carver checks in at eighth in the SBC for scoring in league action, averaging 15.2 points per league contest. Faith Alston checks in at seventh in the league for assists in conference play.
 
App State continues to hold the top spot in the league for made 3-pointers for the season and conference play.  The Mountaineers moved to second in the SBC in team 3-point percentage in conference-only play (.340) and remain fourth in the category for the season as a whole (.307). The Mountaineers continue to stand third in the conference for steals in SBC play. The Mountaineers stay fifth in the league in scoring for the season overall and move to sixth in conference action.
 
Last Time Against Troy
App State faced Troy on Feb. 24, 2022 in Boone after its previously scheduled game on Jan. 1 in Troy, Ala., had been canceled due to COVID protocol. The Mountaineers fell to Troy, 89-56. Faith Alston and Brooke Bigott led the charge against the Trojans, scoring 16 and 10 points, respectively. 
 
Scouting Troy
Troy is 16-10 (11-4 SBC) this season and 7-4 at home. The Trojans opened Sun Belt play with a six-game win-streak that spanned from Dec. 31 to Jan. 19 before it was snapped by a one-point loss to James Madison on Jan. 21. Troy recovered, picking up four more consecutive wins from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4. On Feb. 9, the Trojans fell short to Arkansas State before posting a victory over ULM. The Trojans are coming off a 99-97 loss to Coastal Carolina on Thursday. 
 
Four Trojans are averaging double-digit points per game, led by Makayia Hallmon at 14.2. Nia Daniel leads the team in 3-pointers made per game, averaging 5.2 at a 25.8 percent clip. Averaging 8.2 rebounds per game is Ja'Mia Hollings, and averaging 3.8 assists per game is Sharonica Hartsfield.  
 
UP NEXT 
App State will close out the regular season with a pair of home battles against James Madison and ULM. The Mountaineers will rematch with JMU on Feb. 22 for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Night. The Mountaineers will then host ULM on Feb. 24 and will honor their graduating class on Senior Night. Both games are slated for 6:30 p.m. tipoffs and will be available to stream on ESPN+.
