BOONE, N.C. -- App State men's basketball is set to host Marshall for the first time as Sun Belt opponents on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Both teams stand in the top five of the SBC standings.
The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats and listening options available to follow along.
THE SERIES
- This will be the 52nd meeting between the two schools in a series that Marshall leads 33-18.
- The Thundering Herd defeated the Mountaineers on Dec. 29 to open conference play.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS (13-10, 6-4 SBC)
- App State has won three in a row, defeating Old Dominion, Georgia State and Arkansas State by double-digit margins.
- App State ranks 29th in the nation in field goal percentage defense and leads the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers have held their opponents to 40% shooting from the field.
- Terence Harcum has led the scoring charge in App State's last five wins, averaging 12.4 points in conference play.
- Donovan Gregory averages 4.9 assists during conference play, the fifth-highest in the Sun Belt. The senior has had three games this month with nine assists.
- Justin Abson has blocked seven shots in the last two games, totaling 50 through his first 23 contests. The freshman is now ninth all-time in single-season blocks at App State. The record is 75, set by Jeremy Clayton during the 2007-08 season. After his 11th game this year with three or more, Abson now ranks 13th in the nation in total blocks.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERING HERD (18-5, 7-3 SBC)
- Marshall has turned heads during its first season in the SBC, winning 70% of its Sun Belt games. The Thundering Herd split its last two, fallling to ULM in double-overtime and dominating Georgia State, 103-65.
- Taevion Kinsey is the lone player in the country to be in the top 10 in points and assists this season. The Columbus, Ohio, native is the first player in Marshall's history with 2,000, points, 700 rebounds and 500 assists.
- The only freshman in the country with more blocks than Abson is Marshall's Micah Handlogten (60).
- The Thundering Herd is nationally ranked fourth in assists (18.6) and fifth in rebounds (40.7).
