Mountaineers Set for Wednesday Evening Clash with Davidson

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team is set for an in-state clash against Davidson on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Davidson, N.C. The game will also be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers return to North Carolina after going 2-0 at the Thanksgiving Basketball Clasico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. App State is 4-1 on the season thus far. 
 
On Thanksgiving Day, the Mountaineers delivered a 68-63 victory over Furman. Three Mountaineers scored double-figures, led by senior Faith Alston, who netted 17 points and recorded three assists and two steals. Junior Emily Carver tallied a team-high six rebounds as well as one assist, three steals and 13 points. 
 
On Friday, App State closed out tournament play with a 68-57 win in its first meeting with Binghamton. For a second consecutive game, Alston was the Mountaineers' top scorer, netting a season-high 22 points. Sophomore Rylan Moffitt recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. App State held Binghamton to eight offensive rebounds.
 
Ranked Mountaineers
App State stands second in the Sun Belt and 19th in the NCAA for free throws made per game (17). The Mountaineers are also ranked sixth in the league for steals per game (11.6) as well as turnovers forced per game (21.2). 

Carver stands second in the SBC and 14th in the NCAA for offensive rebounds per game, averaging 4.6. She also ranks fourth in the league for steals per game (2.6) and fifth for total steals (13). 
 
Last Time Against Davidson
App State edged past Davidson for an 84-82 victory in the Holmes Center on Nov. 27 last year. Four Mountaineers scored double-figures, led by Janay Sanders, who scored 24 points. Carver pulled down a team-high five rebounds, while Alston dished out a team-high six assists. The Mountaineers held the Wildcats to five 3-point buckets, compared to their 12. Despite trailing in the first quarter, the Black and Gold gained a 27-25 edge in the second and kept a steady lead to clinch the win.
 
Scouting Davidson
Davidson is 5-1 (0-0 A10) and is undefeated at the John M. Belk Arena so far this season. The Wildcats opened the season with victories over USC-Upstate and Wake Forest before falling in a tight four-point battle to a ranked UNC squad. Davidson rebounded with a win over No. 22 Duke on Nov. 16, which marked the start of a three-game win-streak that included wins over Morgan State and Wofford. 
 
Elle Sutphin and Charlise Dunn are the Wildcats' top scorers, averaging 13.8 and 13.5 points per game, respectively. Dunn averages a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game and also boasts a free throw percentage of .870. Issy Morgan leads the team in the assists category, dishing out an average 3.2 per contest. 
 
On the Horizon
The Mountaineers will return to Boone to host the College of Charleston on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. With finals just around the corner, students are encouraged to "Destress Yosef" with free coffee offered at the game. The men's basketball game against Central Penn will follow at 8 p.m. Admission to both games is $5 and both will be available to stream on ESPN+.
