Mountaineers Ready for Saturday Afternoon Battle with Coastal Carolina

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team is set to clash with Coastal Carolina at the Holmes Convocation Center for a Saturday matinee. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
Saturday's game is App State's Everyone is a Kid Day, where tickets are $5, and free "I don't want to grow up, I'm an App State Kid" shirts will be available to the first 100 fans. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers fell to Southern Miss, 75-68, in their first conference meeting and first clash since 2001. Sophomore Emily Carver led the Mountaineers with a career-high 23 points to mark her third consecutive game with over 20 points. The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week drilled 6-of-8 treys against the Lady Eagles. Junior Faith Alston and redshirt senior Janay Sanders also scored in double figures. Alston netted 17 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while dishing out a team-high five assists. Sanders shot 4-of-5 from the charity stripe and tallied 14 points on the night in addition to three rebounds and two steals. 
 
Around the Conference
App State ranks fourth in the SBC in the scoring category for the season as a whole, averaging 69.9 points per game. Carver checks in at sixth in the league for 3-pointers per game, and Sanders ranks seventh in the league for scoring this season. 
 
In conference-only action, App State checks in at second for 3-pointers made (averaging 8.0 per game) and fourth for team 3-point percentage (.344). The Mountaineers also rank third for steals in league action with an average of 9.71 per game. Carver leads the league in 3-point percentage (.460) as well as 3-pointers per game (an average of 3.3 per game). Carver also stands third for field goal percentage (.468) and ranks fifth for scoring in SBC play. 
 
Last Time Against Coastal Carolina
App State clashed with Coastal Carolina on Jan. 26 and Jan. 29, nabbing back-to-back victories last season. 
 
On Jan. 26, the Mountaineers defeated the Chanticleers, 66-61, in Boone. Michaela Porter dropped 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Carver shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe and pulled down three rebounds. App State shot .667 from the free throw line and tallied 32 points in the paint. 
 
On Jan. 29 in Conway, the Black and Gold went on a furious 14-1 to end the game and emerged with a 70-68 victory, their fifth straight victory at the time. Sanders scored the game's last six points and netted 18 total, while adding six rebounds and four steals. Alston recorded 13 points on the night and recorded four rebounds. 
 
Scouting Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina is 9-9 (4-3 SBC) so far this season. The Chanticleers are on a three-game win-streak, having picked up home wins against Marshall and South Alabama, as well as a road victory against Georgia State. The Chanticleers are 2-7 on the road. 
 
Coastal Carolina ranks second in the league for team free throw percentage (.744) and third for assists. The Chanticleers rank third for team 3-point percentage for the season as well as conference-only action and third for 3-pointers made per conference game. 
 
The Chanticleers' top scorer is Aja Blount, who averages 15.5 points per game and boasts a free throw percentage of .904 as well as a field goal percentage of .490. Blount also leads the team in rebounds, averaging eight per game. In the SBC rankings, Blount leads the league in free throw percentage and is third for field goal percentage for the season. Arin Freeman leads the team in assists, dishing out an average 4.6 per contest. Freeman ranks third in the SBC for assists and fifth for steals this season. 
 
Coastal Carolina went 15-11 (4-9 SBC) last season. In the SBC Tournament, the No. 9 seeded Chants defeated No. 8 seed Arkansas State before falling to No. 1 seed Troy in the quarterfinals. In the regular season, Coastal Carolina recorded an eight-game win-streak that spanned from its season opener on Nov. 9 to Dec. 7.
