CHARLESTON, S.C. — App State Wrestling faces an unbeaten SoCon opponent and a quick turnaround.
About 12 hours after wrapping up a taxing, hard-fought dual against No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 22 App State (4-2, 1-0 SoCon) hit the road Saturday morning for the five-hour drive to Charleston for a Sunday afternoon dual against The Citadel. The match begins at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Mountaineers won three matches Friday night, earning bonus points in two, and three other matches in the 23-11 loss to the Hokies were decided by either one point in regulation or in overtime.
The Citadel, which didn't face App State last year because of scheduling conflicts, is 4-0 this season and 3-0 at home. The Bulldogs' victories are against Long Island, Division I newcomer Queens and two non-Division I programs, with an eight-day break between their last match and the showdown with App State.
To date, The Citadel's top performers have been Blair Orr (9-6 record at 125 pounds), George Rosas (13-8 record at 133 pounds), Selwyn Porter (10-4 record at 157 pounds), Benjamin Haubert (14-7 record at 174 pounds) and Jonathan Chesser (13-10 record as a heavyweight).
Jon Jon Millner has 110 career wins for App State, and
Will Formato picked up his 80th career victory in the Virginia Tech dual.
After Sunday's dual at The Citadel and a Friday dual at VMI, the Mountaineers return to Varsity Gym for a Tuesday night dual against Duke on Jan. 24.
The 2022-23 season is presented by Hungry Howie's and Penn Station.
