BOONE, N.C. – App State scored three runs in the second inning at the plate, and enjoyed a strong start from
Tyler Tuthill on the mound, but a season-worst five errors defensively led to a 14-3 loss to Coastal Carolina Thursday night.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, App State (11-20, 3-10) took the lead with a three-run frame.
Austin St. Laurent was hit by a pitch with one out, and
Hayden Cross followed with an RBI double to right-center to tie the score.
Hunter Bryson made it back-to-back doubles, scoring Cross with a two-bagger into the right field corner.
Andrew Greckel then singled up the middle to put the Mountaineers ahead, 3-1.
Tuthill was strong on the mound after missing last week's start. The lefty worked five innings, giving up two runs on four hits, he walked two and struck out five, and exited with a 3-2 advantage.
The Chanticleers (17-13-1, 6-6-1) regained the lead with three runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a solo home run from Matt McDermott.
With Coastal ahead by two after eight innings, the Chanticleers lead ballooned in the ninth. The first two batters reached on errors, and three of the next four in the order tallied infield singles, plating a pair of runs. Another Mountaineer miscue, on a dropped fly ball, cleared the bases, and a two-run homer from Graham Brown capped the scoring, on the ninth unearned run of the inning.
App State will look to even the series Saturday when they play the middle game of three against the Chanticleers at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. The 2022 App State Baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
