GREENSBORO, N.C. — App State Baseball traveled to War Memorial Stadium on Tuesday and lost 4-2 against North Carolina A&T, which scored two runs apiece in the first and fifth innings.
Phillip Cole (3-for-4),
Luke Drumheller (2-for-3 with two runs scored) and
Austin St. Laurent (2-for-4) had multi-hit games for the Mountaineers (6-9).
Grey LaSpaluto made his first start for App State before giving way in the fifth to
Caleb Cross, who allowed one hit over the next 1.2 innings.
Cameron Kepley retired the last six batters he faced in two scoreless innings.
It was the final game before the start of Sun Belt play for App State, which hosts Georgia Southern for a three-game weekend series that begins Friday at 5 p.m. in Boone.
App State cut into its deficit in the late innings, scoring once in the seventh and ninth.
Drumheller singled with two away in the seventh, moved to third on a Cole single and scored on an RBI single from
Alex Aguila. A flyout with the bases loaded ended that frame.
App State's first three batters of the ninth singled, although the first out came on a first-to-third attempt on the bases. Drumheller moved to third and
Braxton Church (running for Cole) advanced to second before Aguila walked to load the bases with one out.
A fielder's choice scored a run and left two runners in scoring position before a groundout ended the game.
