Mountaineers Welcome Old Dominion for First Conference Clash

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team is set to host new Sun Belt contender Old Dominion for the first time in conference play at Holmes Convocation Center on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN+. 
 
Thursday's game will feature an enter to win giveaway for a variety of prizes for "What You Didn't Get for the Holidays." Fans can enter their names at the marketing table for a chance to win.
 
Last Time Out
App State (4-7) capped nonconference action with a thrilling 87-81 win over Gardner-Webb on Dec. 20. Five Mountaineers scored double figures, with freshman Chaé Harris leading the way, netting 17 points, going 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from the 3-point line. Redshirt senior Janay Sanders scored the second-most points on the afternoon, totaling 16, half of which were scored from the charity stripe. The Black and Gold shot 49 percent from the field and 45 percent on 3-pointers. 
 
App State ranks second in the Sun Belt for 3-pointers made (6.9 per game), following Marshall, who takes the top spot with an average of eight per game. The Mountaineers also check in at fourth in the league for scoring (offense), with an average of 70.8 points per game. Sanders checks in at seventh in the league for scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. 
 
Last Time Against Old Dominion
The Mountaineers last clashed with ODU in nonconference play on Dec. 18, 2021, falling to the Monarchs, 85-49. Michaela Porter was the Black and Gold's top scorer, netting 13 points, while A'Lea Gilbert pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and Sanders dished out a team-high three assists. 
 
Scouting Old Dominion
Old Dominion enters Sun Belt play with an 8-5 nonconference record. From Nov. 27 to Dec. 11, the Monarchs went on a six-game win-streak. Closing out nonconference action at the Sun Coast Challenge, ODU's win-streak was snapped by Mississippi State and New Mexico. 
 
Amari Young is ODU's top scorer this season, averaging 10.5 points per game, as well as the team's top rebounder, averaging 7.8 per game. Young checks in at sixth in the conference for rebounding. Jordan McLaughlin leads the team in assists, dishing out an average of 3.7 per game, ranking ninth in the conference. McLaughlin closely follows Young in scoring, averaging 10 points per contest. 
 
ODU went 24-10 last year, making an appearance at the WNIT, where they defeated Towson in the first round before falling to Columbia in the second. On the way to earning a bid to the WNIT, ODU made it to the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA tournament as the No. 3 seed, defeating No. 7 seeded UTSA before falling to No. 2 North Texas. During the regular season, the Monarchs recorded nine consecutive wins in nonconference play, as well as a trio of three-game win-streaks in C-USA action.
