Mountaineers Close Nonconference Slate with Ugly Sweater Game Vs. Gardner-Webb

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team will close out its nonconference slate on Tuesday as it plays host to Gardner-Webb at Holmes Convocation Center.  Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN+. Tuesday's matinee will be the Mountaineers' Ugly Sweater Game, where fans can enter the Ugly Sweater Contest for a chance to win new airpods. Santa will also be there. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers (3-7) return to Holmes Convocation Center after taking on No. 19 Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines came out on top 77-49 to take a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between the pair. Redshirt junior A'Lea Gilbert netted a team- and career-high 15 points and tallied a team-high four steals on the afternoon. Graduate student Brooke Bigott pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while freshman Alexis Black went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. 
 
App State is fifth in the Sun Belt for made 3-pointers averaging 6.7 per game. The Mountaineers rank sixth for combined team rebounds at 39.2 per game. Individually, Janay Sanders remains in the league rankings for scoring, checking in at seventh with an average 14.1 points per game. She also ranks fourth for free throws made this season with a total of 43.
 
Last Time Against Gardner-Webb
The Mountaineers defeated Gardner-Webb 73-63 on Dec. 5, 2021 in Boiling Springs, N.C. Emily Carver scored a team-high 19 points and was followed by Janay Sanders, who tallied 17 points. Carver and Sanders both made 7-of-11 shots, and Carver went 3-of-6 from the 3-point line. App State totaled 34 points off the bench as well as 16 second-chance points. 
 
Scouting Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb is 8-3 on the season and enters the game with three consecutive wins, defeating Arkansas Pine Bluff, VCU, and East Carolina. The Bulldogs also posted a four-game win-streak from Nov. 12 to Nov. 23. 
 
Gardner-Webb's top scorer and top rebounder is Jhessyka Williams, who averages 18.5 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. Following Williams is Alasia Smith, who nets an average of 13 points per game as well as 7.3 rebounds per game.  
 
Last year, Gardner-Webb went 16-15 (13-5 Big South). In the Big South Conference Tournament the No. 4 seeded Bulldogs edged past No. 5 seed High Point in the quarterfinals (Mar. 3) before coming up short against No. 1 seed Campbell in the semifinals (Mar. 5). During conference play, GWU went on a seven-game win-streak spanning from Feb. 1 to Feb. 19. The Bulldogs also picked up a pair of wins at the Coastal Carolina Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 26 and 28), defeating ETSU and UNCG.

App State opens conference action with new SBC members Old Dominion and Marshall on Dec. 29 and 31. The Mountaineers will host ODU on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Fans can enter to win prizes in the 'What You Didn't Get for the Holidays' event.
