Mountaineers Set for Noon Battle with No. 19 Michigan

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team (3-6) continues its road trip as it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to clash with No. 19 Michigan (9-1) on Saturday. Tipoff is set for noon and the game will be available to watch on B1G+. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers return to the court after a tough 72-70 road loss to North Carolina Central on Thursday. Redshirt senior Janay Sanders scored a team-high 18 points against the Eagles. Sanders has scored the team high in four of nine of the Mountaineers' games so far this season.  Junior Faith Alston recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds on Thursday and freshman Alexis Black scored a career and season high 13 points. 
 
App State ranks fourth in the Sun Belt for 3-pointers made, averaging 7.0 per game, and sixth in the league for combined team rebounds, averaging 40.2 per contest. Sanders checks in at sixth in the conference for scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game, as well as in FG percentage (.447). 
 
Last Time Against Michigan
The Mountaineers last met Michigan on Dec. 14, 2019 in Ann Arbor, falling to the Wolverines, 62-35. Haile McDonald netted 11 points, sinking 5 of 6 shots. Pre Stanley pulled down a team high eight rebounds, scored nine points, and tallied three steals. 
 
Scouting Michigan
Michigan is 9-1 (1-0 Big Ten). The Wolverines started the season with a  nine-game win-streak, which included a win over No. 21 Baylor at the Gulf Coast Showcase (Nov. 27) and first conference win of the season over Northwestern (Dec. 4). Michigan's streak was broken on Dec. 8 by Toledo, who edged past the Wolverines, 71-68. 
 
Emily Kiser is the Wolverines' top scorer, averaging 19.4 points per game. Following Kiser is Laila Phelia, who averages 17.3 points per game, and Leigha Brown, who averages 13.7 points per game. Kiser also is Michigan's top rebounder, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game. 
 
The Wolverines went 25-7 (13-4 Big Ten) last season and earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Michigan defeated No. 14 seed American, No. 11 seed Villanova, and No. 10 seed South Dakota on its way to the Elite Eight, where it fell short to No. 1 seed Louisville (Mar. 28). In the Big Ten Tournament, the No. 3 seeded Wolverines were upset by No. 6 seed Nebraska in the quarterfinals. During the regular season, Michigan posted an eight-game win-streak from Jan. 9 to Feb. 6 and went 8-2 against ranked opponents.

The Mountaineers return to Holmes Convocation Center for a Tuesday matinee battle with Gardner-Webb on Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the matchup will be App State's Ugly Sweater Game. Fans can enter the ugly sweater contest for a chance to win a new set of airpods. Fans can also take photos with Santa. 
 
The Black and Gold will open conference action with new SBC members, Old Dominion and Marshall, on Dec. 29 and 31. App State will host ODU on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Fans can enter to win prizes in the 'What You Didn't Get for the Holidays' event.
