Miami Tops Mountaineers in Series Finale

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — App State completed its weekend series at Miami with a 10-2 loss that ended after six innings Sunday because of travel curfew considerations.

The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday to face ETSU in their final midweek home game on the 2021 schedule. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

App State (16-26) took a 2-0 lead on Miami (27-15) in the top of the first inning and had several chances to cut into a manageable deficit once play resumed following a 2-hour, 19-minute weather delay that began in the bottom of the second inning.

Luke Drumheller and Robbie Young both went 2-for-3, while Tyler Leek (1-for-2 with a double) and Bailey Welch (1-for-3 with one run scored) also contributed in the hit column. Kendall McGowan delivered a sac fly during a two-run first.

Welch led off the game with a single, moved to third on Drumheller's single and scored on McGowan's flyout to left. A two-out throwing error on a hit to third from the speedy Leek allowed Drumheller to score.

After back-to-back walks in the bottom of the first, three straight one-out hits produced a 4-2 lead for Miami, which scored two runs after play resumed in the bottom of the second inning thanks to four straight two-out hits. The Hurricanes added a run in the fourth and a two-out, three-run double to cap a 10-pitch at-bat in the fifth.

Trailing 6-2 in the fourth, App State loaded the bases on Dalton Williams' walk, Leek's double and Alex Leshock's one-out walk. A strikeout that got away from the catcher turned into a double play with a tag at the plate.

One inning later, the Mountaineers had two runners in scoring position with two away, but a pickoff at second base on a 3-2 count ended that threat.

Miami brothers Adrian Del Castillo and Christian Del Castillo were a combined 6-for-7 with five RBIs in the middle of the order, and Yohandy Morales drove in four runs.

Quinton Martinez made an abbreviated start before Jason Cornatzer, Eli Ellington and Andrew Papp pitched after the weather delay.
