BOONE, N.C. — For the second straight year, a league-leading four wrestlers from App State have been named NWCA Division I Scholar All-Americans.
Thomas Flitz,
Will Formato and
Sean Carter all repeated in being recognized as a NWCA Division I Scholar All-American, and they were joined this season by first-year starter
Anthony Brito.
All four wrestlers met a threshold requiring a cumulative GPA or 3.2 or higher, an overall winning percentage of at least 60 percent during the 2019-20 season and participation in at least 60 percent of the team's schedule.
App State has had at least one wrestler earn a Division I Scholar All-American Award in 10 of head coach
JohnMark Bentley's 12 seasons. At the conclusion of the 2021 spring semester, the Mountaineers posted a semester GPA of 3.02 and a cumulative GPA of 3.18.
Flitz, Formato, Carter and Brito all qualified for this year's NCAA Championships, as Flitz went 14-5 at 174 pounds and Formato was 15-4 at 165. Carter went 13-8 at 133 pounds, and Brito was 14-5 at 141 pounds.
There were only 20 Division I programs with four or more 2021 honorees, including just 11 non-Power Five teams.
