Taylor, Staton Named Sun Belt Players of the Week

BOONE, N.C. — Defensive end Demetrius Taylor and kicker Chandler Staton have been named the Sun Belt Conference's defensive and special teams players of the week based on their performances in a 30-27 win against previously unbeaten Coastal Carolina.

Leading an App State defense that held then-No. 14 Coastal to season lows in points (27), rushing yards (55 on 29 attempts) and total yards (346), Taylor produced a season-high 3.0 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks. His 8-yard sack started a dominant fourth quarter in which App State limited the Chanticleers to 16 yards on 10 plays, not counting their three punts.

Taylor has 5.5 TFLs and 4.0 sacks over the last four games.

Staton, also a super senior, kicked the game-winning, 24-yard field goal as time expired. It was his 11th made field goal in as many tries this season and his second game-winner, as he also had a go-ahead kick in the closing minutes of a victory against Marshall.

Staton moved into a tie atop the school record book with 55 career field goals, matching Bjorn Nittmo's total from 1985-88.
