Box Score BLACKSBURG, Va. - App State men's tennis suffered a 6-1 decision at Virginia Tech on Saturday morning at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Appalachian falls to 1-4 on the season while the Hokies move to 3-2 on the year.
Sophomore
Zion Heaven highlighted the day for the Mountaineers, earning his first career victory over a Power Five opponent. Heaven downed Ryan Kros 6-2, 6-1, as the No. 6 in the lineup. It was the sophomore's first dual victory of the spring.
Heaven nearly collected a doubles win with partner,
Aleksandar Petrovic, as they were up 5-3 as the No. 3 doubles tandem, but the match went unfinished. VT claimed the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead against the Black and Gold.
The Hokies won five of the six contests in singles for the win. Heaven's singles triumph sliced the lead to 2-1, but the hosts netted the next two finished matches to clinch.
Alessio Azzalini's singles match could have gone in his favor, but the freshman fell in both sets that went to tiebreakers against Chase Bernstine, falling 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).
App State will host Tennessee Tech tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the home opener for the Apps.
