CHARLESTON, S.C. — App State Wrestling returns to action Saturday with a Southern Conference dual at The Citadel.
The match begins at 5 p.m. in McAlister Field House.
Unofficially in the 28th spot in this week's NWCA Coaches Poll based on its voting points, App State (7-2, 4-0) has won seven straight duals since opening the season with a 19-13 loss at No. 8 North Carolina and a 24-12 loss to No. 3 NC State.
The Citadel (4-3, 2-2) has SoCon wins against Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. The Bulldogs' wins leaders are Dazjon Casto (21-9, 165 pounds), Michael McAleavey (17-15, 285 pounds), Chon Porter (15-15, 149 pounds) and Jacob Dado (14-13, 141 pounds).
App State has two fifth-year senior starters in 149-pound
Matt Zovistoski, whose 95-46 record puts him in seventh place on the program's career wins list, and heavyweight
Cary Miller, whose 90-38 record has him currently in ninth place.
Zovistoski is 23-7 this season with 14 wins in his last 16 matches, and Miller's 27-4 record includes a 9-0 mark in duals. Based on the statistical database from TrackWrestling, Miller is tied for ninth place nationally among Division I heavyweights with seven pins this season and tied for second among Division I heavyweights with six wins by major decision.
That's a lot of bonus points, as Miller also has won three times by tech fall. He's scored an average of 5.0 points per victory in App State's nine duals.
Another top-25 individual,
Jonathan Millner, was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday thanks to his recent victory against 24th-ranked Tanner Smith of Chattanooga. Millner is 25-4 this season, and his seven wins by major decision are tied for first place nationally among 149-pound wrestlers at the Division I level.
With six wins by major decision,
Thomas Flitz (25-10 overall) is second among 174-pound wrestlers at the Division I level, and
Codi Russell's six wins by tech fall rank second among 133-pound wrestlers at the Division I level. That total is also second among all Southern Conference wrestlers, regardless of weight class.
