GREENSBORO, N.C. – The App State softball team dropped two games on the second day of the Spartan Classic, falling to Oakland, 8-1 and Dayton, 2-0. The Mountaineers are now 10-7 on the season.
The Mountaineers took the loss in the first game of the day as Oakland (7-5) used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead and ultimately, the win. Both teams opened up the first inning with a run, as
Emily Parrott scored on a fielder's choice from
Taylor Thorp. Parrott was able to reach base on a single.
From there, neither team would score until the fifth when the Grizzlies put up four runs off of two hits and a Mountaineer error. Oakland would add the insurance runs in the sixth and seventh from a two-run home run in the sixth and a solo home run in the seventh.
Starter
Sydney Holland (6-2) received the loss in the circle, giving up five runs off of five hits and four walks.
Taylor Nichols came on in relief in the fifth, pitching the final 2.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and one walk.
Sydney Campbell (5-1) received the win in the circle for Oakland, giving up one run on six hits, striking out eight. Five different Grizzlies recorded a hit, with Jen Krizka leading the way with two, both of which were home runs. Cammie Brummitt added the other Oakland home run.
The second game was a low scoring affair as Dayton scored in the second and third inning to take the win. A Flyer reached base on a double and then was scored on an RBI single in the second. Abby Ehrenborg homered in the third to add the insurance run.
Kenzie Longanecker (3-5) received the loss in the circle, giving up both runs on six hits and two walks. For the Flyers, Jessica Weaver (3-2) earned her third win on the season, giving up seven hits.
Offensively,
Gabby Buruato led App State with three hits.
Keri White and
Sidney Russell also added two hits apiece.
The Mountaineers play in their final game of the Spartan Classic tomorrow, taking on host UNCG at 12:30 p.m.
