GREENSBORO, N.C. – The App State softball team defeated UNCG 2-1 to end the Spartan Classic on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Sydney Holland threw a complete game no-hitter, the first of her career and the first since head coach
Shelly Hoerner arrived at App State.
The Mountaineers move to 11-7 on the season. UNCG falls to 11-6.
Holland (7-2) allowed only three runners on base the entire game, with two walks and an error. She struck out four in her seventh win of the season.
Taylor Thorp and
Mary Pierce Barnes each had an RBI double to score the two runs for the Mountaineers. Thorp got things started in the first inning, scoring
Emily Parrott who reached base off a single up the middle.
In the second,
Gabby Buruato singled up the middle and was scored by the double from Barnes. From there, both pitchers took over, not allowing another run the rest of the game.
Morgan Scott (6-4) received the loss in the circle for UNCG, giving up two runs on four hits and one walk. The freshman struck out 13 in her seven innings of work.
The Mountaineers have a quick turnaround, hosting Virginia Tech on Wednesday in their home opener. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
