BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – App State field athlete
Peighton Simmons earned All-Sun Belt honors on Day 1 of the Sun Belt Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
After the first day of competition, the Black and Gold sit fifth of 12 teams with 16 points. Arkansas State holds the team lead with 51 points, South Alabama is second with 47 points and Troy is third with 20 points.
Simmons placed third in the long jump to earn Third Team All-Sun Belt honors. Simmons covered a PR mark of 19-7.50 (5.98m) for her conference accolades. Her mark also places her eighth in program history in the long jump.
Taylor Smith also scored points in the long jump for the Black and Gold, finishing sixth with a mark of 18-9.00 (5.71m).
The Mountaineers also got points in the DMR. The tandem of
Annika Merkh,
Araybian Lilly,
Sarah Venable and
Kylee Frady crossed fourth in 12:09.83.
In the 5,000-meter run,
Lila Peters scored two points for the Mountaineers with a seventh-place finish in a PR time of 17:41.50.
In preliminary action,
Jessica Dixon missed her PR by .05 seconds in the 400-meter dash, moving on to the final tomorrow with a third-place time of 55.96 seconds. Dixon also advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.43 seconds, which was just .03 seconds short of her PR.
LaBria King punched her ticket to the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.65 seconds, to place in a tie for sixth. Also in prelims, Venable qualified for Tuesday finals in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:02.98.
Day 2 of the Sun Belt Championships will get underway with the heptathlon at 10 a.m. EST. Field events start at 12:30 p.m. EST, with running events set for a 3 p.m. EST start. Coverage of the day begins at 3 p.m. EST on ESPN+.
