Story Links

BOONE, N.C. - App State women's tennis continued its winning ways with a fifth straight victory, defeating College of Charleston by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Rivers Street Courts.

App State is 5-2 and has won 12 straight home matches, while CofC falls to 5-5 on the season.

The Mountaineers once again captured the doubles point in their match and picked up three singles victories for the triumph.

CofC started by winning Court 1 in doubles before the Black and Gold claimed the two doubles victories they needed to take the 1-0 lead.

Selina Atay/Kate Earnhardt started the come back when they improved to 3-1 on the season after a 6-3 win over Ava Turner/Eleanor Campbell as the No. 3 tandem in the lineup.

Clinching the doubles point was Sasha Pisareva and Sandra Anglesjö, who played their first match of the spring as partners. The duo dealt Anastasia Palaska/Slade Coetzee a 6-4 defeat, giving the Apps a 10-3 mark in doubles during the win streak.

Virginia Poggi quickly defeated her counterpart on the fourth court, 6-3, 6-1, for her second win of the season.

CofC climbed to within one point, 2-1, after winning on the second court. María José Zacarias bounced back after her doubles loss to give Elizabeth Nowak a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 defeat, which gave App a 3-1 edge. Zacarias is now up to four wins on the season.

Clinching the contest was Pisareva to move to 7-0 in singles following her second straight come-from-behind triumph in as many matches.

Following a 6-2 loss to Coetzee in the first set, the junior came back in the next two frames, 6-1, 6-3, for the clincher, and improving to 3-0 in three-set matches this season.

With the match already clinched, the visitors won the next two contests on courts three and six.

App State is 20-11 in singles over the 5-0 stretch.

The Apps will head to Johnson City next weekend to face Charlotte (Saturday) before squaring off against ETSU on Sunday.
