Softball Takes Two Losses in Day Two of Charleston Invitational

The App State softball team took two losses on the second day of the Charleston Invitational, falling 7-5 to North Carolina A&T and 1-0 to College of Charleston. The Mountaineers are now 8-5 on the season
 
App State struck first in the first game against the Aggies, scoring one run in the first inning and four in the second. After Kifer walked and reached second on a wild pitch, Morton singled up the middle to bring her home in the first.
 
Taylor Thorp started the rally in the second with a double to left center. She was moved to third off an infield single from Gabby Buruato. Emily Parrott also had an infield single to bring Buruato home. Caylie Kifer scored both Buruato and Parrott off a single to right center. She was able to score on the play as well off a throwing error by the first basemen to give the Mountaineers a 5-0 lead.
 
From there, the Mountaineer defense would hold the Aggies until the top of the fourth when they scored one off a single to right field. Four more would score in the fifth to tie the game. With two outs, Camryn Brazile came in to to pitch for the Mountaineers, relieving Maddie Siemer. In 4.2 innings of work, Siemer gave up four runs off seven hits and one walk.
 
Both teams were scoreless until the seventh when North Carolina A&T would score the final two runs. Sydney Holland came in to to pitch for Brazile and received the loss in the circle after the Aggies scored on a single and a ground out to second base.
 
In her 1.1 innings of work, Brazile gave up one run off of two hits. Holland (5-1) gave up two runs off two hits and one walk in her inning of play.
 
Kayla Douglas received the win in the circle for the Aggies, giving up five runs off of seven hits and three walks. Dominique Varela led NC A&T offensively with three hits and two RBI. Desttany Parker also added two hits and three RBI.
 
In the second game of the day, College of Charleston scored one run in the bottom of the third to take the win. The run would go down as unearned after the game-winning run reached base on an error.
 
Kenzie Longanecker (2-4) received the loss in the circle, giving up two hits and striking out three. Summer Jenkins received the win for the Cougars, giving up five hits and two walks. She moves to 2-1. Delaney Smith had two hits for the Mountaineers, while Parrott, Thorp and Buruato each added one.
 
The Mountaineers play in their final game of the Charleston Invitational tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. against Ohio.
