CHARLESTON, S.C. – The App State softball team split the opening day of the Charleston Invitational, falling to Bradley, 2-0 in the first game and defeating Charleston Southern, 2-0 in the second game. Senior
Sydney Holland threw her third complete game shutout against Charleston Southern, moving to 5-0 on the season.
Against the Buccaneers, Holland gave up two hits and struck out six in her fifth win. The senior now has a team-best 0.20 ERA and 27 strikeouts on the year.
The Mountaineers (8-3) scored both of their runs in the top of the sixth off a hit and two errors.
Maegan Calandra started the rally with a single up the middle.
Keri White came in to pinch run and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Mary Pierce Barnes then reached base on an error by the catcher and White moved to third. White would score on a throwing error by the catcher on a failed pick off at third base.
With Barnes on third after the throwing error,
Taylor Thorp came up with an RBI off a sacrifice fly to left field. That would do it for the Mountaineers as their defense shut down the Buccaneers for the final two innings. Along with Calandra,
Caylie Kifer,
Emily Parrott, and Barnes had hits for App State.
Alyssa Heinrich received the loss in the circle for Charleston Southern, giving up four hits and five walks in her seven innings of play. The Buccaneers move to 2-5 on the season.
The first game of the day was also a low scoring affair, as the Braves scored one run in the first and second inning to take the win. The first run was scored off an RBI single to center field and the second was an RBI single to the shortstop.
Grace French received the win for the Braves, going the distance and giving up three hits and three walks. Bradley moved to 7-5 on the year after the win.
Kenzie Longanecker received the loss in the circle, giving up seven hits and striking out six. The senior is now 2-3 on the year. At the plate, Parrott had two hits and Barnes added one.
The Mountaineers are back in action tomorrow, taking on North Carolina A&T at 10 a.m. and the College of Charleston at 2:30 p.m.
