Men's Basketball Eyes Season Sweep of South Alabama on Thursday

BOONE, N.C. -- App State men's basketball begins a three-game home stand on Thursday evening against South Alabama. Tip is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Appalachian Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. The two teams currently sit in a tie for fifth place in the Sun Belt standings with 9-7 conference records.

HEROES DAY
Thursday night is Heroes Night at the Holmes Center. All current and former military and first responders receive a free ticket with a valid ID. In addition, fans receive a $5 discount with five non-perishable food cans, with all cans benefit the Hunger and Health Coalition.

TICKETS
Tickets for the remainder of the 2019-20 season are on sale and can be purchased by calling the App State ticket office at 828-262-2079 or clicking here.

ALCOHOL
Plans for alcohol sales at select men's and women's 2019-20 home games include:
  • Craft beer, domestic beer and wine will be sold on the concourse near Section 12.
  • Service begins when doors open one hour prior to tipoff and ends at the conclusion of the third quarter for women's games and at the under 12:00 media timeout of the second half for men's games.
  • All patrons will be required to produce valid identification, which will be checked at the point of sale during each transaction.
  • Per state law, patrons 21 years of age or older will be permitted to purchase a maximum of one alcoholic beverage per transaction with valid identification.
  • Patrons will not be permitted to leave the Holmes Convocation Center with alcohol purchased within the venue.
  • Law enforcement and contracted security staff will monitor the concourse and seating areas for underage drinking, beverage pass-offs and problematic patrons or situations.
  • Public service announcements about drinking responsibly will be shown on the video board and announced via the arena's public address system.
  • Alcohol will be served at all men's basketball home games for the remainder of the season.
THE SERIES
  • This will be the 11th meeting between the two schools, with South Alabama leading 8-2
  • App State snapped a seven game losing skid to the Jaguars, with a 81-71 win in Mobile on Dec. 19
EARLIER THIS SEASON
  • The two teams met in Mobile to open Sun Belt play on Dec. 19, with the Black and Gold prevailing 81-71
  • Justin Forrest finished with a season-high 32 points, while adding four rebounds, six assists and four steals. Isaac Johnson added 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win
  • In the first half, South Alabama jumped out to a 17-11 lead and pushed its advantage to 24-17 with 7:44 remaining in the frame. App State countered with the next nine points to take a 26-24 lead. The Jaguars took the lead back and took a 39-37 edge into the half. The Mountaineers scored the first seven points of the second half to jump in front 44-39. App State pushed its lead to nine points at 53-44 on a layup from Forrest with 15:53 left to play. The Jaguars trimmed the Mountaineers lead to three at 57-54, only to see the Black and Gold score the next five points to build a 62-54 advantage with 10:01 remaining. Leading 64-60, App State went on an 8-2 run to open a double-digit lead at 72-62 with 1:16 to play. South Alabama pulled within seven points, but could get no closer as the Mountaineers closed out the victory
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • App State posted a 62-57 road win at Georgia Southern on Saturday to improve to 15-12 on the season and 9-7 in conference play
  • Adrian Delph tied his career-high with seven made field goals to finish with a career-high 21 points. Isaac Johnson added his team leading fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. O'Showen Williams added 12 points, five rebounds and six assists
  • The Mountaineers have now held 11 opponents to under 60 points this season and rank second in the conference in opponent scoring average, surrendering 66.4 points
  • After Delph's 21-point performance on Saturday, App State has now had five players in Justin Forrest, Kendall Lewis, Delph, Johnson and Williams score 20 or more points in a game this season
  • App State eyes its first ever season sweep of South Alabama since joining the Sun Belt in the 2014-15 season
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
  • South Alabama pushed its winning streak to four streak with a 50-49 win over ULM on Saturday. The Jaguars stand at 16-11 on the season and 9-7 in conference play
  • Trhae Mitchell tallied a double-double for the Jaguars with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Andre Fox added 12 points off the bench
  • Four Jaguars are averaging double figures in scoring in Josh Ajayi (15.9 ppg), Chad Lott (12.8 ppg), Fox (12.0 ppg) and Mitchell (10.7 ppg)
  • As a team, South Alabama is shooting 45.9 percent from the field, which ranks second in the Sun Belt
  • Head coach Richie Riley was named the HoopDirt.com NCAA Division I National Coach of the Week after leading the Jaguars to a pair of wins last week
