BLACKSBURG, Va. - App State women's basketball fell to Virginia Tech 84-59 on Friday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
The Mountaineers fall to 2-1 on the season while Virginia Tech improves to 4-0.
Brooke Bigott continued her solid shooting as she set a personal high with 17 points going 6-of-12 from the floor. The Katy, Texas native shot 4-for-7 from deep, and she also added four rebounds. Pre Stanley poured in 17 points and led the team with six boards. Faith Alston came off the bench to lead the way with seven assists in 18 minutes of action and scored three points.
The Hokies started the game on a 9-0 run for a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game. App State came out of a timeout with a 7-0 spurt thanks to a Michaela Porter 3-pointer and buckets by Stanley and Lainey Gosnell. However, Virginia Tech scored 20 of the final 23 points of the frame to go into the second quarter.
The visitors controlled the contest despite the Mountaineers slicing the deficit to 15 early in the third period with the help of a 9-0 run after three trifectas. Just when it looked like App was gaining some momentum, Virginia Tech stretched the lead back to 20 on the next two possessions to pull away.
Appalachian hit a season-high 10 3-pointers in the contest, which are the most given up by the Hokies this season.
Liz Kitley (30 points, 11 rebounds) and Aisha Sheppard (19 points) led the charge for Virginia Tech, combining for 49 points.
The Mountaineers will have six days off before returning to action on Friday, Dec. 11 against Davidson at 6 p.m. inside the Holmes Center.
Tip-Ins
- The seven assists by Alston are the most by a freshman since 2009-10 when Anna Freeman had eight against Samford.
- The 17 points by Stanley are the most for the senior against a Power Five program.
- Stanley is now 14th all-time in scoring, passing Angela Crosby (1,205 points) and Kiki Conyers (1,211 points).
