BOONE, N.C. — The arrival of a new year and, at long last, a new season.
App State officially opens the 2020-21 season in 2021 with the App State Individual Quad event on Saturday in Varsity Gym. It will now be a three-team event with wrestlers from App State, Virginia and The Citadel, as Kent State announced Thursday it will not participate because of COVID-19 protocols.
Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on three mats.
Based on the continued implementation of Governor Roy Cooper's Executive Order 176 and capacity restrictions for indoor venues, there will be no admission or tickets available to the general public. Access to a live stream is available by subscribing to Yosef Media's Rokfin channel, and live results will be available through FloWrestling.
Fans do have the opportunity to make their presence felt by purchasing a
wrestling fan cutout to have their faces in Varsity Gym for $59 or $30 (student rate), as proceeds from the sales will go directly to App State Athletics to support our student-athletes.
The App State Individual Quad will not utilize a traditional bracket to determine a champion in each weight class. The original plans called for a round-robin-style format with preassigned matches and a goal of getting wrestlers three matches apiece Saturday.
There are a combined 10 NCAA Championships qualifiers from 2020 on the 2020-21 rosters of the participating teams, meaning there could be high-profile matchups at several weights, including 133 pounds, 165 pounds and 285 pounds.
At 133, Virginia's Louie Hayes is a returning NCAA qualifier ranked 14
th in his weight class by Intermat, and App State's
Sean Carter has moved up a weight class following a strong debut as a true freshman at 125.
At 165, the returning NCAA qualifiers include The Citadel's Dazjon Casto, while App State's
Will Formato won the head-to-head matchup with Casto last season and is ranked No. 26 nationally in his weight class by TrackWrestling this preseason.
At 285, Virginia's Quinn Miller is a returning NCAA qualifier with an Intermat national ranking of No. 20, while The Citadel's Michael McAleavey is the preseason All-SoCon choice at that weight and App State's
Michael Burchell posted a 21-13 record with several quality wins as
Cary Miller's backup last season.
