CONWAY, S.C. – App State volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-18) contest at Sun Belt East Division leader and No. 15-ranked Coastal Carolina on Thursday.
Lexi Kohut paced the App State (1-11, 1-11 SBC) offense with a team-high 12 kills on a .263 hitting percentage.
Kara Spicer added five kills for the Mountaineers.
Emma Reilly recorded a team-best nine digs and
Sophie Cain dished out 19 assists, while adding three digs.
In the first set, App State used a kill from Kohut to pull within a point at 6-5. The Chanticleers (15-0, 15-0 SBC) came right back with a 6-1 run and closed the set on an 11-1 spurt to take the opening frame 25-9.
In Set 2, the Mountaineers used a Spicer kill to jump in front 4-2 early on. The Chanticleers used a 3-0 run later in the set to take a 10-9 lead, only to see the Black and Gold get kills from
Sarah Missroon and
Grace Morrison to take an 11-10 lead. Another kill from Spicer later in the frame broke a 14-14 deadlock and gave the Black and Gold a 15-14 lead. Coastal Carolina answered with three straight points to take a 17-15 edge. The Mountaineers pulled within a point three more times in the set, but could get no closer as the Chanticleers took a 2-0 lead with a 25-22 victory.
Coastal Carolina used an early 4-0 run in the third set to jump out to a 6-2 lead, only to see App State answer with three straight points to pull within a point at 6-5. A kill by Kohut brought the Mountaineers within 10-9, but the Chanticleers answered with a 4-1 run to open a 14-11 advantage. App State pulled within two, but Coastal Carolina used runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to pull away for a 25-18 set victory to clinch the match.
Anett Nemeth recorded a match-high 16 kills for the Chanticleers.
The two teams will conclude their brief two-match series on Friday at 1 p.m.
