BOONE, N.C. - It's been seven months since App State women's golf teed off in a team event.
The Mountaineers will finally hit the links for its one and only fall event beginning this Monday through Tuesday in the Terrier Intercollegiate, hosted by Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
"We are going in with a simple game plan," head coach Heather Brown said. "Stay focused and keep it simple."
A total of of five universities are set to dual in the two-day, 54-hole event from the Palmetto State. The field consists of App State, The Citadel, Coastal Carolina, ETSU, Wofford and Chattanooga.
The Black and Gold will face the likes of a par-72, 6,012-yard course at the Country Club of Spartanburg. In light of COVID-19, each team will be in groups of two or three from their respective schools to reduce contact tracing.
"Playing together is what we are used to from practice," Brown said. "It has it's plus and minuses. We have to make sure we are in competitive mode right from the start."
Melany Chong, Carrie Catherine Gamin, Kayla Ward, Abby Bolt and Mogie Adamchik are the projected starting five for App State. Monday morning's opening-round split tee times will commence between 9 and 10 a.m on holes No. 1 and No. 10.
36 holes of competition are scheduled for Monday (Oct. 26) with the final round of 18 to take place on Tuesday (Oct 27).
Chong will be competing for the Mountaineers as a fifth-year graduate student after sitting out last year as a redshirt. In her career, she has three top-5 individual finishes to go along with an individual title back in 2018 at the Low Country Intercollegiate.
Abby Bolt medaled as an individual runner-up last season at the Judaculla Cup. Gamin posted a career-low round of 69 back in September at the Golfweek Caledonia Amateur event.
"All the girls have played in at least one individual event," Brown said. "I think at this point they girls are just ready to compete as a team. I think COVID-19 has actually helped us mentally for the better. The kids have been great at keeping things in perspective."
Spectators are allowed at the Terrier Intercollegiate, but those in attendance must exercise social distancing and wear masks when required. Live stats will be provided by BirdieFire, a free and downloadable app.
"We will just take this tournament for what it is and try to learn from it," Brown said. "The most important aspect is to keep it simple. Make pars and avoid big numbers."
