BOONE, N.C. - App State women's soccer ended the weekend with a convincing 3-0 victory over Wofford on Sunday afternoon at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
The Mountaineers improve their record to 3-4-2 on the season and boast a 3-0-2 mark at home. Wofford drops to 3-5 on the year.Â
After a first half in which neither team scored and App State shot just six times, the Apps scored all of their season-high three goals in the second frame with eight shots on goal and 13 shot attempts.Â
Molly Niewald started the run in the 60th minute when she headed her first goal in just her second contest of the season after returning from injury on Friday, while both
Hulda Agustsdottir and
Kirsten Seeley were credited with the assist.Â
The offense continued the attack six minutes later when
Mary Perkins fired in a shot from long range that the goalkeeper was unable to stop.Â
With 10 minutes left,
Kyndall Edwards found
Tess Cairney, who then made a nifty move on her defender to get an open shot that found the back corner.Â
Wofford had six shots on goal but none were as threatening as the penalty kick late in the game.
Kerry Eagleston made an impressive save to keep the Terriers scoreless en route to the first clean sheet of her career. The freshman came up with six saves in the triumph.
Appalachian held a dominating advantage with a season-best 19 shots and 10 shots on frame. App also posted a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.Â
The Mountaineers take on Coastal Carolina on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Conway.Â
