Thomas a Player of Year Candidate With Walter Camp Inclusion

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State quarterback Zac Thomas is among 40 players nationally on the preseason "players to watch" list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Friday.

Thomas is one of only five players from a Group of Five program on the list. He already has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award, another national player of the year honor, and the Davey O'Brien Award, which is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback.

Thomas' QBR of 79.8 in 2018 ranks ninth nationally among returning FBS quarterbacks. The Sun Belt's reigning Offensive Player of the Year, he completed his first season as an App State starter with 2,039 passing yards, 504 rushing yards and a combined 32 touchdowns (21 through the air, 10 as a runner and one as a receiver).

This summer, Thomas served as a counselor at the prestigious Manning Passing Academy, where he placed second in the passing competition.

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in mid-November.
