BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State senior
Victor Johnson has been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is given annually to the top lineman in college football.
Johnson started at left tackle in each of the previous three seasons and made the All-Sun Belt Conference first team each of the last two years. Named the league's best pass blocker by Lindy's, he's the most experienced member on an offensive line that has ranked in the top 25 nationally in both rushing yards per game and fewest sacks allowed for the last five years.
Johnson has made 38 starts since he started his first game as a redshirt freshman at Tennessee in the 2016 opener, and he's one of eight offensive tackles from a Group of Five conference program to be included on the 2019 watch list. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award — ends are not eligible.
The Outland Trophy, now in its 74th year, is the third-oldest major college football award.
