NEW ORLEANS — Recent Appalachian State women's basketball graduate
Madi Story was selected to receive a 2019 Sun Belt Postgraduate Scholarship, the league office announced Thursday.
The scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes with stated intentions to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements and sent directly to the graduate school of each recipient's choice. The recipients are selected by the Sun Belt Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, which is comprised of Faculty Athletic Representatives from across the conference.
Story is one of seven student-athletes from the conference to earn a scholarship, joining Georgia State's Nuria Ramirez (Women's Track & Field), Georgia Southern's Lane Ecton (Football), Georgia State's Gabe Mobley (Football), Louisiana's Jackson Ladner (Football), South Alabama's Gavin Patterson (Football) and Alexandria Stiteler (Women's Tennis).
The Maiden, N.C., native will receive $3,000 to go toward graduate school. After graduating in May with a Bachelor's degree in communication disorders and posting a 3.96 GPA, Story will begin pursuing her Master's degree in speech-language pathology at App State in the fall.
Story had a decorated career in the Black and Gold as the staple for women's basketball. She helped the Mountaineers win 22 games in 2018-19, claim their second WBI title and post the fifth-best turnaround in the country. She led the Apps in scoring (12.3 ppg) while finishing second in rebounding (4.7 rpg) and plus/minus ratio. In addition, she goes down in App State history as ninth in career scoring (1,294 points), sixth in free throws made with 317 and 19th in rebounding. She became the 25th member of the 1,000-point club following a season-high 28 points in a 24-point win over Wofford.
Off the court, Story made the Dean's List in the fall of 2014 and spring of 2016, while she made the Sun Belt Commissioner's academic honor roll all five years and also App State's academic honor roll.
