Box Score TROY, Ala. - Appalachian State University women's basketball (15-13, 9-8 SBC) fell to Troy (21-7, 12-5 SBC) on Thursday evening, 95-66, inside the Holmes Center.
Pre Stanley led the Mountaineers in scoring with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. It's the highest outing for Stanley since her season-high 23 points against the Trojans at the Holmes Center.
Lainey Gosnell scored 11 points for her sixth straight game in double figures, while
Tierra Wilson rounded out the leading scorers with 10 points.
Bayley Plummer posted her 10th game of the season with at least 15 boards, snagging a game-high 15 rebounds and scoring five points in the process.
Ashley Polacek led the Black and Gold
with seven assists.
Troy took an early lead but a
Maya Calder layup early in the first period cut the gap to just one, 7-6, with 6:57 left in the frame. App was unable to capitalize on looks inside the paint and the free throw line, which
led to the Trojans outscoring the Apps, 17-8, the rest of the way and taking a 24-14 lead at the end of the period.
The Trojans went up by as much as 17, 38-21, in the second stanza, but the Mountaineers dug in and went on a 13-4 run over the final 5:05 of the half to slice the lead to single digits, 42-34. The Mountaineers started 3-of-3 during the surge. After Troy went up 42-29, App ended the half on a 5-0 burst highlighted by a buzzer-beating field goal from
Madi Story off a missed free throw.
The first possession's execution in the third quarter on offense was done to perfection with Plummer scoring down low, which cut the Troy advantage to six, 42-36. Stanley kept the Mountaineers within striking distance on two occasions at six points. A layup later in the frame by the sophomore put the score to six, 52-46. The momentum stopped there with Troy going on a 14-0 run late in the quarter to pull away the rest of the game.
App State shot just 36.6 percent from the field and hit only four 3-pointers. The Mountaineers and Trojans both had 16 offensive rebounds, but Troy held an 18-7 edge in second-chance points.
Appalachian will end the regular season on Saturday against South Alabama at 5:05 ET.
