App State Prepares for Sun Belt Opener at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, GA. – Appalachian State (10-6) opens Sun Belt play at Georgia Southern this week with a three-game series beginning on Thursday, Mar. 7. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Game two will be on Friday, Mar. 8 at 3 p.m. The series finale will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 9.
 
APP STATE OFFENSE
The Apps hit double-digit wins on Tuesday against Tennessee State in a nine-inning offensive battle. Junior Keri White leads the Mountaineer offense as the leadoff hitter, batting .418. She ranks seventh in the Sun Belt for overall batting average going into this weekend's series. Senior Jenny Dodd is second in the Sun Belt for walks with 14, for a team-high on-base percentage of .462. Alison Durrence is tied for third in the league with her five home runs.
 
APP STATE DEFENSE
On defense, the Mountaineers lead the Sun Belt with a .981 fielding percentage with the least amount of errors (nine). Sydney Holland currently holds the third lowest ERA in the Sun Belt with a 1.79 ERA in her eight appearances in the circle. Kenzie Longanecker also makes the top ten with her 3.19 ERA, the eighth lowest in the conference.
 
A LOOK BACK AT 2018
App State held the Eagles to three close games last season. Despite three home runs in Saturday's doubleheader from App's Baylee Morton, Georgia Southern swept the Mountaineers. In the final game of the series, Georgia Southern hit a three-run homer to break the 0-0 ballgame and seal the win.
 
The offense stood out from both teams, with 19 total hits in game one, 21 hits in game two and 13 in game three. Defensively, both teams struggled with 11 total errors in the series.
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Georgia Southern holds a 13-7 record going into conference play with an 11-3 record at home. In 60 games against the Eagles in series history, App State is 13-47.
 
Shelby Wilson leads the Eagles with a .447 batting average. Logan Harrell has an Eagles-high eight home runs with a .333 batting average.
 
Rylee Waldrep has spent the most time in the circle for the Eagles. In 44.1 innings pitched, she maintains a 3.95 ERA. Jess Mazur and Ashleigh Morton are probable starters this weekend as well.
