BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (11-4, 5-0 SBC) battled to a thrilling 4-3 decision against Louisiana (6-10, 1-4 SBC) on Saturday afternoon at Cajun Courts.
App State is the lone undefeated team left in the Sun Belt during league action, while the Mountaineers are on a five-match win streak. In addition, App has matched last season's win total with five contests left in the regular season.
The match went back and forth, especially in singles with four of the matches going to a third set, three of which that went in the Apps' favor.
"We're so proud of the ladies' effort after a slow start in doubles," head coach Black Mosley. "We really played with heart and fought until the end on every court."
Heidi Swope delivered the clinching the point for the Black and Gold in one of the three Appalachian's wins that went to three frames. She defeated Morgan Forshag, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, in a hard-fought battle.
After Louisiana won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead,
Jeannez Daniel tied up the contest with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Ai Noa Fabre. The Cajuns retook the lead in the next finished affair on Court No. 1.
Rebecca Morse came back from a one-set deficit to upend Clara Mantaux, forcing a third set after collecting the second stanza, 6-1. She sealed the victory with her 6-2 win.
Kate Earnhardt fell to her counterpart in three sets, where she also came back after falling in the first set. Earnhardt won the second frame, 6-4, but was edged in the final set against Dana Radovanovic.
María José Zacarias evened up the match with her timely victory in three sets. The match against her counterpart went to a tiebreaker in the first two frames with Zacarias winning the first set 7-6 (7-5), and after she fell in the second, the sophomore won the match in the third set, 6-2.
App State will end the weekend and aim for a third Sun Belt sweep tomorrow at 10 a.m. against ULM.
