BOONE, N.C. – In Friday's home opener, Appalachian State Softball shut down the North Carolina A&T Aggies in back-to-back, five-innings shutouts. The team posted an outstanding 21 hits and 27 total runs on the day.
The Mountaineers swept the Aggies to bring their overall record to 3-3. Junior
Keri White batted a perfect 6-for-6 on the day with three hits in each game.
Alison Durrence continues to shine with a home run and a grand slam on the day, bringing her total to four so far this season. She had four RBIs in game one and three in game two.
The team's batting average increased from .179 before today's doubleheader to .259 after two impressive offensive performances. The Apps' last shutout win came on March 6, 2018 at Norfolk State.
Game One (W, 15-0, 5 innings)
Junior
Keri White went 3-3 with a single, double and a triple in game one against the Aggies. Durrence's grand slam came in the second inning as she launched it over the left centerfield fence for the first grand slam of her career. The Mountaineers racked up 15 runs on 10 hits for the win.
Kenzie Longanecker limited the Aggies to two hits while striking out five batters.
Taylor Nichols made her Sywassink/Lloyd debut, coming in for the final 1.2 innings in the circle. She struck out one without allowing any hits in the five batters she faced.
Game Two (W, 12-0, 5 innings)
The Apps crushed four total home runs in game two in a 12-0 win, three of which came in the first inning from
Caylie Kifer,
Haley Stewart and
Jenny Dodd. Durrence followed in the second inning with a three-run homer. Dodd went 2-2 with a home run, a double and a walk for a game-high four RBIs in game two.
Sydney Holland,
Maddie Siemer and
Leanna Whaley split time in the circle for the Mountaineers. Holland picked up the one-hitter win. As a pitching staff, Apps' five pitchers combined did not allow a single walk in today's doubleheader.
