BOONE, N.C. — All four App State Wrestling captains made Mountaineer Invitational finals, with
Jonathan Millner (149 pounds) claiming a title on Saturday at Varsity Gym.
Cary Miller (heavyweight),
Codi Russell (133 pounds) and
Matt Zovistoski (157 pounds) also reached finals in an event that included Invitational wrestlers from Oregon State, Duke, Central Michigan, West Virginia, Kent State, Air Force, and Gardner-Webb. An open tournament was also held at the same time.
Millner wrapped up competition with a 15-11 decision against Duke's Wade Unger following a 6-3 semifinal decision against Central Michigan's Corbyn Munson, a 13-11 decision against Oregon State's Lane Stigall in the quarterfinals and a 6-3 decision against Air Force's Parker Simington in the first round. Millner trailed 6-2 in the first period of the final, had two takedowns in the second period and gained third-period separation thanks to two stalling penalties on Unger.
Miller went to a Sudden Victory overtime against sixth-ranked Matt Stencel of Central Michigan before Stencel used a takedown to win 3-1 in their final. In a matchup of top-15 wrestlers at 133, Russell dropped a 10-6 decision in the final against Oregon State's Devan Turner, and Central Michigan's Logan Parks won 3-2 in the 157 final against Zovistoski.
Russell reached the championship round with a dramatic 9-8 decision against Central Michigan's Deven Perez. An escape with three seconds left allowed Perez to take an 8-7 lead, but Russell responded immediately with a takedown.
Will Formato claimed third place at 165 pounds for App State thanks to a 6-5 decision against Kent State's Kade Byland, while
Paul Carson (197) and freshman
Julian Gorring (184) placed fourth in their weight classes. Formato also posted a 12-0 major decision against Duke's Ben Anderson, who was No. 23 in the country at 165 pounds, according to FloWrestling's rankings.
In the open division, App State got second-place finishes from
Michael Burchell (heavyweight),
Tyler Kellison (133 pounds, unattached),
Cody Bond (149 pounds, unattached) and
Brett Mordecai (165 pounds, unattached). There were also third-place showings from
Christian Beach (165 pounds),
Sean Carter (125 pounds, unattached) and
De'Andre Swinson-Barr (133 pounds, unattached).
