App State Mourns the Passing of Pete Shankle

BOONE, N.C. — The App State Baseball family mourns the passing of Pete Shankle, an App State graduate who was a teacher and coach for three decades in the Durham Public School System.
 
Shankle, who was 67, led Southern Durham High School to two state baseball championships (1987, 2001) and was inducted into the N.C. Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2015. He had more than 500 wins as a baseball coach.
 
He received many other honors, including the NCHSAA's "Homer Thompson 8 Who Make a Difference Award" in 2001, the "Leon Brogden Special Person Award" in 2002 and the "Outstanding Contribution and Recognition Award" for the first 90 years of the NCHSAA.
 
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at Clements Funeral Home.
