Appalachian started hot from the field, shooting 58.6 percent from the field en route to a 39-22 lead against Elon. However, the Phoenix held the Mountaineers to just 17 second-half points to force overtime before
pulling out the win.
Pre Stanley scored a season-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, leading four student-athletes in double figures.
Bayley Plummer collected a career-high 23 boards, making her the third player in program history to reach the 1,000-career rebound feat. She also surpassed Anna Freeman for second place all-time in career rebounds with 1,020.

Plummer is one of two players in the nation with Ruthy Hebard of Oregon to have at least 1,000 boards, while she is first among the nations active leaders in total rebounds. The Thomasville, N.C. native is second in rebounds per game at a rate of 10.2 per game, while her 23 off the glass is the second-highest in a game thus far. She is the only player to have at least 650 points, 1,000 rebounds, 125 blocks, and 100 assists. Through the first two games of the season, she has 37 percent of the Black and Gold's rebounding output.
Tough Schedule
South Carolina is the second opponent through the first three games to be picked to win its conference. VCU was selected to win the A-10 and the Gamecocks, the SEC. Appalachian faces eight opponents
that were picked to win their league or finish second.
What to Watch for
- Despite the setback to Elon on Wednesday, the Apps got out to a fast start, shooting 11-of-14 in the first quarter against Elon and posting 26 points. See if the Mountaineers can come out fast against South Carolina. Appalachian is outscoring opponents 35-31 in the first quarter, the highest margin in any period.
- South Carolina is allowing 18.6 offensive rebounds in the first three games of the season. Watch if Appalachian can get second-chance opportunities.
- The Gamecocks are averaging 28.7 free throw attempts through the first three games. See if the Black and Gold can keep USC off the line. Appalachian allowed just 25 attempts against VCU and Elon.
Scouting South Carolina
- One of the perennial powers in the nation, No. 6 South Carolina is off to a 3-0 start after a 75-49 win at Dayton on Wednesday.
- Zia Cooke posted 27 points for the winners, while Victaria Saxton scored 13 points.
- Mikiah Herbert Harrigan posted 10 points with four blocks.
- South Carolina returns six letterwinners a pair of its starters from last season's Sweet 16 squad.
- USC brought in six newcomers, including one transfer. The Gamecocks had the top recruiting class last season.
- South Carolina is first in the nation in blocked shots (11.3 per game), sixth in field goal percentage defense (24.6 percent) and ninth in free throws made with 60.
- The Gamecocks have been a tough out at home, boasting a 55-9 mark since the 2015-16 season.
Series History
App State is 4-12 against the Gamecocks. The Mountaineers are looking for their first Power Five win since 2011-12 when they beat NC State on the road in the WNIT. The Mountaineers fell to South Carolina last season in Columbia.
