LEXINGTON, Va. — Appalachian State Wrestling heads to Virginia for its first Southern Conference road dual against VMI on Sunday.
The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
The Mountaineers (3-5, 1-0 SoCon) opened their league schedule with a 39-10 home victory against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, giving App State its 17th consecutive win in a conference dual, and VMI (2-7, 1-0) won 29-13 against fellow SoCon member Davidson back on Dec. 1.
The Keydets last competed in the Lock Haven Classic on Dec. 29, and their last dual was a 28-15 loss at Hofstra on Dec. 9.
Randall Diabe (197 pounds),
Cary Miller (heavyweight),
Matt Zovistoski (149 pounds) and
Alan Clothier (184 pounds) all had pins against Gardner-Webb. Miller ranks just outside the top 10 nationally with six pins against Division I wrestlers (he has seven overall this season).
VMI is led by Neal Richards at 174 pounds. His 9-0 record in duals is part of a 16-3 overall record that includes five pins and five major decisions. He'll likely face App State's
Joe Accousti, who made his first dual appearance of the season at 174 pounds against Gardner-Webb after going 2-0 at that weight in SoCon duals last year.
Another matchup of note will be at 133 pounds, where App State's
Codi Russell likely will face VMI's Hunter Starner. Russell went 6-1 in SoCon duals last year and added a win by forfeit against Gardner-Webb. Starner is 11-9 overall and 5-4 in duals this season.
