BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's soccer (6-4-1, 3-0-0 SBC) is off to its best start in Sun Belt play since joining the conference after a 2-0 win over Coastal Carolina (4-5-1, 3-1-0 SBC) on Sunday afternoon at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
Sunday's contest was originally scheduled for Saturday in Conway, but was moved due to the unfortunate aftermath of Hurricane Florence.
"Today was about more than just soccer," head coach
Sarah Strickland said. "We're here to support Coastal Carolina and to help them as far as rallying to get them home and get started again. The game was exciting and Coastal Carolina played really well. Our focus today was to play good soccer, but also be supportive of them and all they have gone through."
Appalachian improves to 4-2 at Ted Mack and snaps a two-game skid at home, while the three-match win streak is a season best.
The Mountaineers didn't waste any time in getting on the board when
Jessica Easley served up another impressive service kick, this time to
Blair Anderes in the box before the senior fired in the shot for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 edge for App.
After
Taylor Ray made one of her eight saves on a shot attempt by CCU's Sigurvinsdottir,
Maggie Hanusek delivered a perfect cross in the box to
Jessica Peters. The freshman sent the shot in the left side of the net for her first collegiate goal and pushed the App State lead to two (2-0).
Coastal came out of the locker room with an aggressive mindset with seven of its 10 shots on goal in the second period. However, Ray and the defense stopped all seven of the shots including a pair of team defensive saves that kept the score at 2-0.
Ray's eight stops this afternoon is a season best for the redshirt junior, while the clean sheet is the first of the campaign.
The Mountaineers will go for a 4-0 mark in league action next Friday when they host Texas State at 7 p.m.
