NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Appalachian State men's golf team finished sixth in the team standings at the spring season-opening Bash at the Beach, held at the par-71 Surf Golf and Beach Club course. The Mountaineers posted a two-day, three-round score of 884 (293-290-301), just four shots out of fourth place.
"It was nice to get out on the course again," App State head coach
Bo Redman said. "We definitely looked a little rusty. The golf course was fantastic and the weather was great. Getting everyone on the team a few tournament rounds this early in the season is a great way to start."
Division II golf power Newberry College took the team title with a team score of 853, finishing one stroke ahead of Charleston Southern.
Sophomore
Tripp Summerlin paced the Mountaineers in the individual standings, tying for 11th place at 4-over 217 (73-69-75). Junior
Alex Burris was right behind him at 218 (73-71-74), tied for 13th. Competing as an individual, freshman
Christian Bailey was App's other top-20 finisher, tying for 18th with a 7-over 220.
Two golfers shared medalist honors at 6-under for the tournament – Newberry College's Carlos Leandro and Charleston Southern's Jacques Wilson.
App State returns to the links when it hosts its second straight tournament, this time March 11-12 for the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate in Leland, N.C.
