App State Players Shine at 2018 Pro Day

BOONE, N.C. – Eleven seniors from the 2017 Appalachian State football team, which claimed its second straight Sun Belt Championship and a 34-0 win over MAC Champion Toledo in the Dollar General Bowl, worked out in front of pro team scouts at the team's annual Pro Day on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers went through testing, drills and position work in front of 20 representatives from 14 different NFL teams and two Canadian Football League teams at the Appalachian Athletics Center and the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility.

Colby Gossett, who is projected to be chosen in next month's NFL Draft, let his numbers stand from the NFL Scouting Combine, while participating in offensive line drills Tuesday. Those Combine numbers included 32 bench press reps of 225 pounds and a 5.20 40-yard dash.

By all accounts, safety A.J. Howard and offensive lineman Beau Nunn helped their NFL prospects Tuesday. Howard clocked a 4.50 40, the fastest of the day, while also putting up 24 reps on the bench press. He continued to impress scouts with his work in the defensive backfield drills. Nunn, a four-year starter next to Gossett on the right side of the App State line, ran a blistering 5.01 40, put up 28 bench press reps and showed off his trademark quickness and flexibility.

Devan Stringer's 4.57 40-yard dash would have ranked sixth among linebackers at the Combine, and his 23 bench reps would have been tied for fifth-most. He also would have ranked top six in the vertical with a 38-inch jump.

Wide receiver T.J. Watkins recorded the longest broad jump of the day (10-4), while linebacker Rashaad Townes showed strength and athleticism with 26 bench press reps and a 35.5-inch vertical.

Several players will conduct individual meetings and workouts with NFL teams over the next few weeks. The 2018 NFL Draft is set for April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
