GREENSBORO, N.C. – Appalachian State softball dropped two heartbreaking losses today to Seton Hall and Virginia in day one of the UNCG Invitational on Friday, Feb. 23.
App State vs. Seton Hall (L, 2-3)
App State scored their three runs in the top of the third inning.
Keri White started the hitting streak with a single to centerfield.
Sidney Russell followed with a single to shortstop. White and Russell positioned themselves in scoring position for
Haley Stewart who singled down the leftfield line to score two. Seton Hall throws Stewart out advancing to second base to end the three-hit inning for the Mountaineers.
The Apps remained ahead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Alannah Basile hit a two-run homer as a pinch hitter to tie up the score at 2-2, forcing an international tiebreaker in the eighth inning. The Apps came up short after Seton Hall singled up the middle to score the runner at second base.
Haley Stewart and
Keri White both had two hits against the Pirates. Russell,
Alisha Josey,
Baylee Morton and
Avery Wheatley each had one hit apiece.
Kenzie Longanecker pitched seven innings, allowing eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
App State vs. Virginia (L, 3-4)
The Apps held Virginia to four runs in seven innings. The Mountaineers had a comeback inning in the bottom of the seventh with two pinch hits and a pinch-hit walk contributing to a three-run inning.
Alexa Sells pinch hit for
Ally Walters and drew a walk for the first Mountaineer on base in the seventh.
Kayla Fredendall pinch hit for
Avery Wheatley and singled to left field.
Keri White and
Sidney Russell drew back-to-back walks resulting in loaded bases and an RBI for Russell.
After a pitching change for the Cavaliers, Morton sent a grounder up the middle for 2 RBIs to lessen the deficit, 4-3. The Mountaineers were close to scoring again after bases were loaded, but H. Josey's pinch hit to shortstop allowed for the final out at third base.
The only four hits from the Apps were from Morton, Stewart, H. Josey and Fredendall. Three of the four were pinch hitters.
Julianna Roupas allowed only two walks in just over four innings, and
Katie Williford allowed only one walk in just over two innings.
