Women's Basketball Rides Momentum Into Sunday Versus Marshall

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's basketball (3-2) hosts Marshall (1-3) in search of its fourth straight win on Sunday at 2 p.m. inside the Holmes Center.

About the Mountaineers

Last Time Out
Trailing 53-43 with 2:12 left in the third quarter against Elon on Tuesday,  Appalachian went on a 22-9 run over the last 12:12 of the game to upend the Phoenix, 65-62. Madi Story scored a game-and-season-high 17 points, while Maya 
Calder notched 11 points off the bench. Ashley Polacek dished out a career-high 11 assists with six points and five rebounds. Polacek is the first App State player since Raven Gary in 2012-13 to record at least 10 assists in a game. 

Passin' Polacek
Over the last three games during the win streak, Polacek has 20 assists to just four turnovers. Polacek posted just seven assists and 10 turnovers in the first two games of the year. Going into Sunday, the redshirt-junior is first in the Sun Belt with 27 assists and second in assists per game (5.4). 

Calder Stepping Up
Coming off the bench, the Maya Calder is averaging 10.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and shooting 60.9 percent from the floor. The Landover, Md., native posted back-to-back double-figure performances in the last two victories. She's a team-best plus-16 over the 3-0 stretch. 

What to Watch for
• App has five players averaging at least eight points per game with Madi Story, Pre Stanley and Maya Calder all averaging 10.3 points over the three-game win streak. Watch if the Apps can continue to have a balanced attack on Sunday. 
• The unit of Lainey Gosnell, Story, Calder, Stanley and Polacek have been successful when together. In 26 possessions during the 3-0 stretch, they have averaged 1.15 points per possession on the court. Watch if this unit can keep it going. 
 

Scouting Marshall

• Marshall picked up its first win of the season against Bluefield State, 82-29, on Tuesday.
• The Thundering Herd are led by second-year head coach, Tony Kemper.
• Shayna Gore leads the team in scoring at an 18.0 ppg scoring clip.
• Khadaijia Brooks is pulling down a team-best 6.3 rpg, while Kristen Mayo is dishing a team-high 3.0 apg. 
• Marshall has been successful in turning teams over, as its 36th in the country in steals per game (12.3) and 38th in turnovers forced (22.8). 
• The Thundering Herd also likes to get the 3-ball off, where their 114 3-point attempts through four games is 43rd in the country.
• Gore is in the top 70 in the nation in 3-pointers made with 12. 

Series History

Appalachian holds a 23-19 edge in the all-time series against Marshall. The Mountaineers are 9-2 over the last 11 games dating back to the 1994-95 season. App State 
escaped Marshall with a narrow 56-54 win in Huntington.
