Mountaineers Fall to Kent State in Final Regular Season MAC Matchup

KENT, OHIO -- Appalachian State University field hockey (5-12, 1-5 MAC) dropped a 3-1 setback in its final regular season conference matchup at Kent State.

Junior Ali Williams recorded her seventh goal of the season in the second half off a breakaway opportunity. Another junior, Melissa Nobile, garnered her second assist of 2018 on Williams' goal in the 62nd minute. Williams has combined to notch three goals and an assist among her past four contests.

The Mountaineers fired nine total shots, registering seven of those strikes on target. Three student-athletes recorded two shots on goal apiece -- Williams, sophomore Veerle Van Heertum and junior Michelle Taylor

On defense, Annette Jarosz made her fifth defensive save of the season. Jarosz's stop moves her into a tie for second place in Mountaineers' history with 10 career defensive saves. The Elkridge, Maryland native has also now recorded at least five defensive saves in back-to-back years for the Black and Gold.

"We played a tough Kent State team that finished on its opportunities," head coach Meghan Dawson said. "We capitalized on one of our opportunities, and we were able to have a defensive save by Annette again. She's been steady in the back for us."

Kent State's Emma Bessler notched the opening goal in the 16th minute. The Mountaineers held the Golden Flashes scoreless for the rest of the first half, but Kent State doubled its lead within five minutes into the second period.

Laila Ritchter netted the Flashes' final score in the 55th minute.

Redshirt-freshman Madison Nuckols made five saves, all of which came in the first half. Nuckols faced 16 total shots from the Golden Flashes.

App State closes out the regular season on Sunday at Bucknell. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
