CHARLESTON, S.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis (4-12) won the doubles point and grabbed two singles wins, but it wasn't enough in a 4-3 setback to College of Charleston (8-4) on Thursday evening at Patriots Point.

The Apps won the doubles point in thrilling fashion taking two out of three matches. Heidi Swope and McKayla Zupan claimed their team-leading seventh win of the season with a 6-3 triumph as the No. 2 duo over Rachel McNeely and Turner Yates. Gabrielle Wreder and Megan Mullen would fall in their match to Liza Fieldsend and Christi Woodson, 7-5, leading the doubles portion to a 1-1 tie.

With both teams capturing a match, Melissa Machado and Taylor Bygrave gave App the 1-0 lead in an exciting 7-6 (7-3) victory over Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke as the No. 3 tandem.

However, App couldn't keep the momentum going with the hosts picking up four of six singles matches. Swope fell to Fieldsend in a hard-fought contest 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) before Rebecca Morse suffered a 6-1, 6-3 setback to Woodson.

In No. 3 singles, Wreder would fall to Mara Argyriou in a tight match 6-2, 6-4, and Bygrave tried to bring App back but fell to Anastasia Palaska 7-5, 6-3.

With the Cougars having already clinched the match, Machado and Mullen ended the day on a high note for the Mountaineers. Machado dealt McNeely a 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) defeat as the No. 4 in the lineup. Mullen followed up with a three-set triumph over Turner Yates, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-3.

Mullen joins Bygrave with a team-high seven wins, while Machado is second with six victories. Bygrave and Machado are now 4-0 as doubles partners.

App will have a quick turnaround as it faces Charleston Southern tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Charleston.
