Wrestling Hits Road to Face Ohio

BOONE, N.C. — With one ACC match in the rearview mirror and a high-profile one scheduled for next weekend, Appalachian State's wrestling team hit the road Friday for a Saturday morning dual meet against a MAC opponent.

The Mountaineers (2-1) will face Ohio (0-1) at 11:30 a.m. in Athens' Convocation Center.

App State opened its dual meet schedule by sweeping Bloomsburg and Davidson at the Mountaineer Duals, and it lost at North Carolina last weekend. After competing against Ohio, the Mountaineers will host No. 6 N.C. State in Varsity Gym on Dec. 10.

App State got victories at UNC from 157-pound sophomore Laken Cook, who claimed a 9-8 decision, and 165-pound redshirt freshman Thomas Flitz, who earned a 10-8 decision. Cook is 11-4 this season with three pins, two major decisions and one technical fall. Flitz is 9-4 with one pin.

After facing Ohio nine times from 2006-07 to 2014-15, App State will go for a breakthrough win against the Bobcats. Picked fourth in the eight-team MAC, they opened their dual meet schedule with a 27-9 loss to Buffalo.

Ohio's Austin Reese was the top-rated wrestler at 165 pounds in the MAC's preseason rankings, but Ben Schneider wrestled at that weight class in the loss to Buffalo. The MAC rankings had 133-pound Cameron Kelly at No. 3 in the league, and he is currently ranked 14th nationally by InterMat. App State's Codi Russell has been wrestling at 133 pounds for the Mountaineers.
