BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's basketball used a dominating fourth quarter to push past Tusculum, 78-58, on Tuesday afternoon at the Holmes Center in the lone exhibition of the preseason.
The Mountaineers outscored the Pioneers, 24-6, in the final frame while shooting 57.1 percent in the period, which was the best of any quarter. App State ended the contest on a 17-0 run over the final 5:42 of the game, and held Tusculum scoreless over the final 6:35 of the game on 0-for-11 shooting.
Tusculum got off to a strong start shooting 53.3 percent from the floor en route to a 22-12 first quarter lead. But the Mountaineers started clawing their way back outscoring the visitors over the next three quarters. Appalachian took a commanding lead after a 54-54 tie thanks to a 5-2 spurt in the beginning of the fourth period, a lead that App wouldn't relinquish.
Tierra Wilson led the way on offense with a game-high 21 points, while
LaPresha Stanley poured in 18 points and grabbed eight boards.
Maya Calder registered 13 points and corralled 11 off the glass for a double-double.
App State will have 10 days before it hosts ACC foe and WNIT runner-up, Georgia Tech in the season opener on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. inside the Holmes Center.
