DURHAM, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey (8-9, 3-3 MAC) was shutout 4-0 in a hard fought battle against No. 2 Duke (15-2, 4-2 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Appalachian goalkeeper
Rachel Gaines made 16 saves against 36 shots by the Blue Devils with 25 on goal. The Mountaineers had six shots, three on target.
Annette Jarosz also made three second-half defensive saves, bringing her season total to five, which is the most in a single season since Marissa O'Brien made five defensives saves in 2015.
Duke put up 20 shots in the first half, but Gaines made 10 saves and
Rebecca McLean made a defensive save, allowing just one goal. The Mountaineers had three shots, one on target by
Ali Williams. The teams would go into the half with a 1-0 score in favor of the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils scored three times in the second half behind 16 shots with two scores by Ashlyn Kristen. Chloe Bell had two shots on goal for the Mountaineers, but Duke goalkeeper Sammi Steele deflected them away for her seventh shutout of the year.
Appalachian will return home tomorrow for Senior Day with a noon matchup against American. The Mountaineers will honor
Taylor Cimbalist,
Rebecca McLean,
Maddie Phillips and
Savanna Sheridan before the game.
