LAFAYETTE, La. - Appalachian State University women's soccer (3-10-3, 2-5-1 SBC) tied a season-high three goals in an exciting 3-2 triumph over Louisiana (5-8-2, 2-4-2 SBC) in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Cajun Soccer Complex.
The win snaps a five-match winless streak while it's the second conference win on the road, and the most goals scored away from home this season. Appalachian needed a win to stay in thick of the conference tournament race, and collecting three points on Sunday brings App to within one point behind the Ragin' Cajuns and Little Rock.
"I'm so proud of these ladies," head coach
Sarah Strickland said following the win. "We have had a tough schedule and played several games on Sundays where the team was rested on Friday, and this group has stuck to the process. We have seen several significant injuries this season, and the group has continued to battle and step forward into a new role. UL is a great program and is very disciplined and well coached. They are dangerous in a multitude of ways, so getting a result was huge."
Scoring her first goal of the season,
Emmily Cowie made sure it was a crucial one as she sent a corner into the net at 104 to give the hosts their third-straight loss. Cowie had a stellar day with a score and an assist, giving the junior six points on the season and a team-best four helpers.Â
Appalachian had to come back from one-goal deficits twice in the contest, including a clutch goal from
Kat Greer, who tied things up in the 88th minute when App was facing a 2-1 deficit. It was Greer's team-leading fifth goal of the season while all five scores have either given App the lead or tied up the match for the Black and Gold. Louisiana struck first in the opening five minutes of the contest before
Lindsey Tully scored her second goal in as many games 14 minutes later to notch the score at 1-apiece.Â
In a back-and-forth affair, UL recaptured the lead, 2-1, in the 80th minute before Appalachian fought from behind to score the next two goals in regulation and overtime, picking up the significant victory.Â
App State will finish the regular season with a pair of home contests next weekend. The Mountaineers will host ULM at 7 p.m. before hosting Coastal Carolina on Sunday for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
