ATLANTA, Ga. –– Tyrell Johnson turned in a career night, finishing with 22 points, while three others finished in double-figures, however, it wouldn't be enough and Appalachian State University men's basketball would fall to Georgia State 83-72 on Monday night.

Johnson was an efficient 6-for-8 from the floor, including a stellar 10-for-11 at the foul line en route to his career night. The 10 free throws made were a career-best for Johnson. The sophomore also grabbed three rebounds and tallied one block in the effort.

The Mountaineers (6-12, 1-6 Sun Belt) got off to a lightning fast start to open the game, beginning 4-for-5 from the field leading to the first media timeout. Ronshad Shabazz notched seven of the team's first 10 points. Shabazz finished the game with 18 - his 35th double-digit scoring game of his career. Shabazz also finished with seven boards and four assists.

The Black and Gold led for nearly nine minutes of the first half and with a 19-18 lead, a short 6-0 run for the Panthers (12-6, 5-2 Sun Belt) propelled them into the lead, one in which they would take into the locker room up seven at 39-32.

An 18-5 run to start the second half, keyed by an Isaiah Williams jumper saw the Panthers soar to a game-high 20-point advantage at 57-37. Despite the damage, Appalachian weathered the storm and worked its way back into the ballgame.

App State closed to within just nine points at 68-59 with 6:12 remaining in regulation following two Johnson free throws, but it's the closest they would get the rest of the way.

Off the bench for the Mountaineers, Patrick Good splashed in three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, while Griffin Kinney scored all 12 of his points in the second half after registering just seven minutes in the opening period.

In 19 minutes off the Mountaineer bench, Isaac Johnson once again led the Apps on the boards with a team-high eight rebounds. Johnson also collected four points.

As a team, the Mountaineers enjoyed one of their finer games at the charity stripe, finishing 21-for-24 at the free throw line.

D'Marcus Simonds led the Panthers with a game-high 25 points, while Malik Benlevi was the other lone Panther to notch double-figures with 10 points. The Panthers shot 56.9 percent from the field for the game.

Appalachian will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 28 when it hosts UT Arlington inside the Holmes Center. Tipoff between the Mountaineers and Mavericks is set for 3:30 p.m.
